How I came to work for ES?
I was living in Calgary at the time and although I had a great job, I was looking for that next challenge when I was referred to Darrell by a previous co-worker. We had some discussions on the phone and then I flew out to Vancouver to meet with the team.
I came in expecting a typical stuffy, conservative broker's office and instead walked in to a bright yellow office with laughter bellowing all the way out to the hallway! That day I had interviews, did some role playing scenarios with the team and had an hour-long meeting with an industrial psychologist. It was an eye opening day for sure. I got sick on my way back home (some would say from the rigours of the day while others would chalk it up to flight sickness. I bet on the latter and decided to take the position!).
My role here is to run the Employee Strategies component of our business (specializing in employee benefits). I'm fortunate to be able to align this with my passion for wellness (I'm a Life Coach as well); bringing this element to our clients has been a great evolution for our industry.
Accordingly, I try to model my client relations after my hero, Deepak Chopra. He has great insight and calmness combined with exceptional business acumen. I think a key value I offer to our clients is the ability to crunch numbers and discuss contractual provisions with the best of them, but I'm also able to talk for days on end about the "softer" side of benefits and health and wellness. To top it all off, I have an actual personality (which I'm told is rare among number crunchers)!
